Restaurant and gratuity calculator

Free Tip Calculator

To calculate a tip, multiply the bill by the tip percentage: a 20% tip on an $86.40 bill is $17.28. This free tip calculator does that math for you, lets you tip on the pre-tax bill or the bill including tax, rounds up if you like, and splits the final total between any number of people to the exact cent.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server.

The formula and rounding rules

Tip = tip basis x tip percentage, rounded half up to the nearest cent. The tip basis is the bill before tax, or the bill plus tax if you choose to tip on the total. Final total = bill + tax + tip.

Round tip up raises the tip to the next whole dollar. Round total up raises the tip just enough to make the final total a whole dollar. Neither option changes an amount that is already a whole dollar, and neither ever lowers the tip.

Per person = final total / party size. Leftover cents go to some guests one cent at a time, so the shares always add up to the exact total.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the United States, 15% to 20% of the bill is standard for table service. 18% is a common middle ground, 20% or more rewards great service, and many restaurants add an automatic 18% to 20% gratuity for large parties.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or after-tax amount?

Etiquette guides traditionally base the tip on the pre-tax bill, since tax is not part of the service. Tipping on the total including tax is a slightly more generous choice. This calculator lets you pick either and shows the tip basis it used.

How do I calculate a 20% tip in my head?

Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. On an $86.40 bill, 10% is $8.64, so a 20% tip is $17.28. For 15%, add half of the 10% amount to itself.

How does rounding work in this tip calculator?

Rounding only goes up. Round tip up raises the tip to the next whole dollar. Round total up raises the tip just enough to make the final total a whole dollar. Amounts that are already whole dollars do not change.

How is the per-person share calculated?

The final total is divided by the party size in cents. When it does not divide evenly, the leftover cents are assigned one each to some guests, so every share adds up to exactly the final total.

Does this tip calculator save my bill?

No. All math runs in your browser. Your bill, tax, and party size are never sent to PartyHub Rental or any other server.
